Mathematics of Influenza: Models for the Transmission Dynamics and Control of Seasonal and Pandemic Flu Outbreaks
"A new A/H1N1 influenza (flu) strain was identified in Mexico City on April 2009. Within weeks 590 confirmed cases with 26 deaths had been reported in Mexico; 140 cases in Canada; 403 in 38 states across the USA; and about 1500 cases in twenty-five nations in Europe, Canada, New Zealand, and Asia. The preliminary reports suggested that the 2009 A/H1N1 outbreak bore similarities to 1918 H1N1 flu outbreak and the WHO pandemic alert classification quickly rose from level 3 to 5. In these sessions, we will review the course of the epidemic, the interventions used to slow its spread, and possible preparations for the future.

Workshop Celebrating Diversity - Part I of IV: Modeling in a Complex World

"Modeling has become an increasingly important application within mathematics. Mathematicians have been able to shed light on a variety of real-world problems with a plethora of mathematical and statistical techniques. The present minisymposium includes vignettes from several areas of mathematics and applications including some in biological and social settings."
