JBMSHP celebrates 40th anniversary

Over 100 guests gathered on October 4, 2025, to celebrate the JBMSHP’s 40th anniversary. Alumni spanning from the 1980s to today’s students came together to honor the program’s lasting legacy and impact. Members of the Bustoz family were also in attendance, including Dr. Joaquin Bustoz’s son, Dave Bustoz, who shared insights into his father’s motivation for founding the JBMSHP. He reflected on how Dr. Bustoz, shaped by his own experiences with racism in STEM, recognized the importance of creating academic opportunities where underrepresented students could thrive and succeed.
Four alumni shared how their experiences at the JBMSHP shaped their journeys, inspiring and empowering them to pursue degrees in STEM.

MCMSC Co-Director Dr. Fabio Milner highlighted the lasting significance of the JBMSHP and its many achievements. Alumni and staff members, Ciera Duran and Cindy Barragán Romero, shared inspiring stories about watching students thrive in a space where students not only learn but also believe in their potential. Afterward, guests mingled, reconnected with old friends, and met new members of the JBMSHP family — continuing the spirit of community that defines the program.
