Pathways to Success: Supporting Transfer Students in the Mathematical Sciences

The primary goal of this workshop is to strengthen pathways and support systems for Maricopa Community College students interested in transferring to Arizona State University to pursue studies in mathematics, statistics, data science, and related fields. The workshop will focus on identifying effective practices for mentoring and advising prospective ASU transfer students, helping students better understand academic pathways and expectations, and creating opportunities for meaningful connections with ASU faculty before and after transfer. Participants will also learn about opportunities available to high-performing transfer students at ASU, including accelerated Master’s programs, undergraduate research, internships, and other academic and professional development experiences. The workshop will highlight ways that MCC instructors and advisors can help students prepare for and take advantage of these opportunities early in their academic careers.

A second major goal is to develop stronger and more formalized networks between the ASU School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) and mathematics, statistics, and data science instructors and advisors across the MCC campuses. Through information sharing and discussion, participants will explore ways to improve communication about transfer pathways, curriculum, advising, student opportunities, and academic expectations. The workshop will also provide a foundation for continued collaboration through faculty and advisor networking, joint student programming, mentoring initiatives, and other shared activities. Ultimately, the workshop aims to establish sustainable connections between ASU and MCC that will enable faculty and advisors to work together more effectively in identifying, preparing, mentoring, and supporting high-performing students as they transition to ASU and pursue advanced study and careers in the mathematical and statistical sciences.
